I haven't posted anything in a while because it's been bat shit around here lately. But today really took the cake...

I walk into work this morning (I'm a teacher)and one of the students drops in front of me and has a seizure. We got him stabilized and called an ambulance.

At 2:10, a gang fight broke out between two 8th graders in my computer lab. It's the worst class I have. They are a transitional bilingual Hispanic class so a)they understand English but refuse to speak it b)talk in Spanish so I can only marginally pick up what they are saying and c) are all gang-bangers. I just barely broke it up, called security and the fucking fire alarm goes off!

Turns out one of the poor autistic students (he's only 9) ran out of his class, sprinted down the hall and pulled the fire alarm.

So, now I'm stuck with the classroom full of gang-bangers who are trying to kill each other AND have to usher them to safety---->OUTSIDE. It's freezing, it's snowing and no one is listening to me. We get outside...only to have the fight start again. I screamed for security but no one can hear me because we have a huge campus.

I watched these 4 kids pound each other into oblivion in the snow and decided that it wasn't worth trying to break up. I moved the other 'students' out of the way and let them have at it until security and the Fire Dept. arrived.

But I can't shake that mental image of these young kids trying to kill each other over nothing. Is this why I became a teacher? What the hell is going on? If our children don't eat themselves to death, they most certainly will kill each other off, one by one. As for the future of America? I'm trying in earnest to teach it right now but if they can survive past high school, they will be too under-educated to hold even the most menial of jobs.

For the first time in the 16 years I've been teaching...I'm scared.

Maybe I should just laugh it off as just another day in Chicago....

Ken Burns-The War

Is there anyone else out there watching 'The War'? It's just one of the most incredible things I have ever seen. Burns has really come to redefine this genre and this documentary is no exception.

I really debated whether or not to watch this. My parents were Holocaust survivors and rarely spoke of their experiences. Even though we were not Jewish, the Nazis used Polish civilians and POW's as slave laborers and later placed in death camps for resistance or because they could no longer work. My father and I used to watch war movies and documentaries together and it was in those moments that he would mention tidbits and memories of the things they endured. In some ways, this documentary makes me feel closer to both of them, now that they are both gone.

My father met my mother in one of those slave labor camps just before they were liberated by the Brits. He saw my mother from a distance, and swore that if he survived, he would find this beautiful girl with the sad, haunted eyes, marry her and run away. And here I am.

We are losing this generation at a rapid rate. A generation that fought, came home and went on with their lives as if nothing happened. They need to be honored and thanked before they are all gone.

Is his sole purpose on the show just to make tea and coffee? Even Max from 'Hart to Hart' had more to do. Please flist, tell me that more is coming for Ianto...

Looks like Stephen Colbert is a fanboy. He just mentioned Doctor Who on his show (Thurs. June 28). He was interviewing Doug Bailey, founder of Unity08, a political party based on the internet. Apparently they will be holding an internet convention next year, to which, Colbert replied...

"...wait a minute...so you're just going to get a bunch of computer nerds (signing up)...you're going to end up with a nomination for Doctor Who and Chewbacca (for pres/vice pres)".

So...should I be offended that I'm stereotyped? Or sign-up and cast my ballot? DR.WHO/CHEWBACCA08!!!

Check out his site at

http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/the_colbert_report/videos/celebrity_interviews/index.jhtml

and look up Doug Bailey, for the interview. It may not be posted for another few minutes. It's good for a laugh!

I've just had a horrible thought about the Doctor/Jack supposed final revelation...Spoilers Beware!

I've heard the rumors. I've read about the Barrowman/Tennant squee fest in the trailer about the script. Up till "Sound of Drums", I truly thought, that Jack had some Time-Lord connection and that final revelation would come to fruition in the final episode. But now, I'm not so sure. For 2 reasons:

1. There is too much to be resolved in just 45 minutes for any meaningful character development for Jack. We've had our resolution to "Parting of the Ways" in "Utopia". Jack is a fixed point in time/space and is immortal. Done.

2. There was so much slash going on in "Sound of Drums" that it's all canon now. Looking for meaningful character development is lost. That's not to say that exploring the Doctor's sexuality is not character development, but I really wanted more Time Lord back story/motivations/revelations.

So, in conclusion, I believe that Barrowman and Tennant were not squeeing because of a Jack revelation that he maybe a Time Lord, or the Doctor's/Master's brother/son, whatever. Tennant and Barrowman are simply going to kiss with tongues. Jack will release some of his immortality juice into the Doctor and he will be young again. That's it. And all I've been hoping for all season is just not going to happen. It's all a big tongue kiss. Fuck.

If it all happens differently...then watching season 3 would have been worth it. But I'm resolute in thinking that this is RTD and it's not about what I want.

Since the craziness of episode day has died down a bit, I thought I would try my hand at a review. Well, not a review, really. Maybe some musings, predictions or general spoilery...maybe. Kinda sorta...

The episode was a blast. Yes, short on plot...in fact, you could drive a truck through the holes in the plot...but beside the irritating 'Road Warrior', Midnight Oil people...this was a very cool episode.

1. I scared the living shit out of the dog and cats when I yelled "Fuck yeah! The Master!" That was shameful but a big huge nod to Derek Jacobi and his "I AM THE MASTER!" revelation.

2. Thumbs up to John Simm who is parodying Ten. You want to be funny, goofy, smiley and cheeky? Checkmate buddy...but at the end of the day...I'm a bad muthafucka...

3. Professor Yana was wonderfully played by Jacobi and seemed to radiate a kinder, grandfatherly (Hartnell?) aspect of the Doctor.

4. Jack...I missed you. Why are you such a grumpy ass on Torchwood? The much talked about Jack/Doctor scene was intense but from what I can tell...not all has been resolved. Jack still has a secret, doesn't he? Or is that just the immortality thing? Jack is dangerous...the Doctor is afraid of him...can his mere presence have something to do with the Master? Something is not right here...could Jack be 'Time-Lordy'? Or a new hybrid species of Time Lord? I've been saying it since PoTW but everyone tells me I'm full of shit.

5. The Doctor's fear of Jack is understandable...someone in this comm described it as your pet being on fire but being ok...but really disturbing to you and setting everything around you, on fire. But it still doesn't explain the Doctor's actions...prejudice...maybe...something is indeed rotten in Denmark.

6. If the regenerated Master returns to present day Earth as Harold Saxon, then why couldn't the Doctor sense him while he was there already? This better not be explained as one of those time travel paradox thingeys...predestination paradox ala Bad Wolf. They better not...just no. Or could the Master have gone back, found the real Harold Saxon, (who just so happens to look like him) killed him and took over his life?

7. Martha, baby, let's kick some ass...you are so due.....

I'm waiting, very impatiently, tapping out a happy tune on the table, for The Sound of Drums.

The whole Jesus statue opening his eyes and then beheading a nurse. Yeah...not the movie to be watching late at night. Then there are all the religious statues that apparently bleed and cry. Just creepy.

Last week's "Sopranos" episode had a cardboard cut-out of Silvio Dante moving his finger, apparently 'pointing out' the rat in the safehouse. Eerie.

Here in Chicago, there is a totem pole on Lake Shore Drive that is supposedly haunted. There is a small Native American figurine attached to the middle of the pole which, according to some people, keeps changing positions. I think I'm going to do what the Doctor says and just not blink when I'm around them.

Anyway...and excellent Doctor-lite episode, written by the genius Stephen Moffat.
I just have to take some time out from all the Memorial Day festivities around here and pay tribute to my FIRST fandom EVER. Yeah...Star Wars. But for me, the movie wasn't about the Jedis, the Dark Side or bounty hunters. Instead, it was all Han Solo. While all the other 10 year olds in my class were buying up Luke and Darth Vader toys, and swooning over the likes of Mark Hamill (how many "Dynamite" and "Tiger Beat" covers was he on?) I was identifying with the 30+ cynic and non-believer, Han Solo. He was cocky, all smart ass and out for his own good.

You start trying to put things in perspective as you get older. Looking back on this fandom made me realize what a cynic I was at the ripe old age of 10. I totally identified with this rogue pirate because in him, I saw so much of myself. Deep down, he was fiercely loyal to his friends, took great pride and care in his ship and really hated the evil that surrounded him. He may have been a scoundrel but he certainly wasn't an evil bastard. He believed in self-preservation and survival because the universe was a pretty fucky place to live.

All great characters, if they truly become larger than life, achieve redemption. For Han Solo, redemption did not come in the form of a light sabre or hidden truth, rather it came in the form of a princess. Two words in the English language made my heart go THUMP and they were "I know". And my first ship was born. Han Solo was redeemed and reborn in Leia, by all the shippy goodness of Love. He sacrifices himself for her, accepting the cause and thereby growing into a better, truly heroic person. Han Solo was the everyman, because in all honesty, we can all do that. I'll never attain jedi abilities or wield a mighty sword, but I can become heroic in the small things I touch day by day.

Anyway, that's my rambling for the day. Star Wars, for me, was about Han Solo and the redemption of the everyman, not through birthright or power but by acceptance and connection. He was my hero's journey. It's funny how my other fandoms run so similar to this one.

Is it any wonder why I favor my Doctor with a bit of leather?

BTW--The prequels sucked because there was NO Han Solo!!

This was a very shippy episode! All the poor old DW fanboys living in Mom's basement must have been cringing.

I loved Thomas Sangster who played Tim. He was great in Love Actually and was trying his best not to be Haley Joel Osment here.

So who are the Family of Blood and why are they trying to catch a Time Lord? I need to discuss!

Finally, does anyone have any screen-caps of the Doctor's journal? I'd love to look at the Rose page as well as the pictures he drew of his former selves. Can anyone post or direct me to them?

Thanks....

But just a little spooky nontheless....

It starred Patrick McGoohan as John Drake, British spy extraordinaire who relied on his wits rather than guns and avoided romantic entanglements like the plague. It evolved into the one hour series "Secret Agent" replete with super gadgets and complex plots with intelligent writing. McGoohan was approached to play Bond before Connery but declined because he felt the character was morally bankrupt. Wow. Secret Agent turned into McGoohan's brainchild, "The Prisoner", a sequel of sorts of what happens to agents who "know too much".

MY CHIROPRACTOR
I'm in love with my chiropractor. Seriously. Not only does he give the best deep tissue massages on the planet but he is the singularly most gorgeous man on the planet next to Chris Eccleston. My back isn't the only thing that feels great after I leave his office. ;)

JEFF BUCKLEY
My favorite singer/songwriter. His album "Grace" has to be one of the greatest rock/folk records ever made. His version of "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen precedes Rufus Wainwright's and is better. Check out "Last Goodbye", "Eternal Life" or "Lover, You Should Have Come Over" and then realize he died at 30 in a tragic drowning accident 10 years ago. A genius taken from us too soon.

ICONS

This was my poorly created icon for my fanfic "Of Time Lords and Men" wherein I envisioned my villain, The Valeyard, to be played by Peter Wingfield of "Highlander" fame. My story had him killing the Face of Boe just as he imparts his secret to the Doctor. The Valeyard then takes over the Doctor's body and insanity ensues. Should have finished this fic sooner because as most of us know...the Face of Boe is dead and the secret is out. Damn my procrastination.

This was Chris Eccleston's appearance on Mastermind:Doctor Who edition. Apparently it's a kid's quiz show in the UK and in this certain episode our favorite Time Lord answered a child's question about the Doctor/Rose relationship. "Does the Doctor fancy Rose?" the child asked. "ABSOLUTELY!!" replied Eccleston. He also described himself as "an unemployed Time Lord". *Squee* Then there was the question of his wardrobe. He dressed like he just fell out of bed...jogging pants, denim shirt, windbreaker and black velcro trainers. WTF? I love how he just doesn't give a shit as to what he looks like. Somewhere in between 'down to Earth' and 'I'm not here to impress anybody'. This is the only man I would shag who looks awesome in Armani and homeless chic.

My Father died on February 17th of this year. Needless to say I made this icon when I posted the news of his death and my eulogy to him on LiveJournal. He and I were very close and I took care of him these past years while his health failed. I miss him so much. He was my inspiration, my mentor and best friend. I'm still trying to pick up the pieces. This photo was taken for a photography project in college. The project had us photograph our parents and since my Mom had already passed, I wanted to do just a simple portrait of him. But he wouldn't smile (he was really self-conscious). So I set the timer on the camera, snuck up behind him and bear-hugged him. We both cracked up and the shutter clicked. The rest was history. It's my favorite photo of him because it really captured our relationship.
